There are TWO ways to host and operate a blog:

1. Host it on a web-based platform such as Blogger or WordPress.com

2. Run it on a self-hosted platform ( buying a domain and web hosting service )

To start a self-hosted blog, you need TWO things:

1. A web hosting account ( Bluehost ) to store your blog content

2. Choose A Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is a similar process as choosing a company name.

It requires thought and consideration. Your domain name is the “www” address of your blog. It’s the title that gives your website an identity and directs readers to your page. Choose a name that fits your business AND is easy to find/promote.

T I P ! Ensure that your handles match or are as similar as possible

BEFORE you go ahead and buy your domain – make sure you can get that same name on Social Media. Social media is such an important part of building a brand that it’s so important that you can be found there.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Use a ‘.com’ domain whenever possible if you’re Canadian, ‘.ca’ is second best
  • Make it easy to say, spell, type and remember
  • Include Keywords
  • Keep it short and simple
  • Make it memorable
  • Eliminate the risk of it being misspelled
  • Don’t include hyphens or numbers
  • It’s okay to use your name if it’s a personal resume or portfolio
  • ACT FAST! Domain names are being claimed every milliseconds

  • Hosting packages are available for 12, 24 and 36 months
  • You’re required to pay a full year in advance ( with GREAT refund options )
  • Bluehost will give you a reminder to renew once your expiry date approaches

10. OPTIONAL: Using An Existing Domain Name?

In order for your existing domain to be displayed on your new site, you must change your name servers wherever your domain is CURRENTLY registered ( GoDaddy etc. ) By changing your name servers, you point your domain to your new site.NOTE: Changes are instant so don’t change your domain to your new site until it’s ready to go! In the meantime, you can access your new blog through a temporary URL. You will likely receive one in your welcome email from Bluehost. To change your name servers, note the Bluehost name server information:

  • ns1.BlueHost.com
  • ns2.BlueHost.com

Next, go to the registrar where your existing domain is currently registered and enter the above information in the appropriate place. This varies among registrars but can easily be found by calling them or using the Search Bar.

Good Luck & Have Fun!
